Slack huddle on macOS 14.2+
How to record a Slack huddle on Mac without a bot.
Slack does not record huddles. There is no native recording feature, no admin toggle, no "save this conversation" button. Mac Note Taker fills the gap: it taps the Slack huddle's system audio at the OS mixer via ScreenCaptureKit, mixes it with your mic, and transcribes locally.
The recipe
Three steps, about three minutes.
- 01
Install Mac Note Taker
Download Mac Note Taker from macnotetaker.com, drop it into Applications, and grant Microphone + Screen Recording permission. macOS 14.2 or newer is required for the stable ScreenCaptureKit audio path.
- 02
Start or join the Slack huddle
Open Slack and start or join a huddle in any channel or DM. You do not need a Slack admin to enable anything - huddles have no native recording, and there is no setting to flip.
- 03
Click record in the menubar
Click the Mac Note Taker menubar icon and press Record. The app captures your microphone and the Slack huddle system audio in parallel, diarizes them locally, and gives you a named-speaker transcript when the huddle ends.
Why Slack huddles need a recorder
Huddles are where decisions actually happen.
Slack does not record huddles. Period.
Slack ships clips and threads, but huddles are ephemeral. The audio is gone the moment the huddle ends. No replay, no transcript, no nothing.
Bot recorders cannot join a huddle.
Slack huddles are not standard meeting links - they are peer-to-peer Slack audio. Cloud notetakers that rely on dial-in URLs cannot show up. Local capture is the only path.
Decisions get lost.
Engineers, founders, and PMs huddle constantly for ten-minute alignment chats. Without a transcript, those decisions live only in someone's memory.
ScreenCaptureKit is huddle-agnostic.
Mac Note Taker reads the OS mixer, so it captures whatever audio Slack is playing - huddle, clip playback, in-call audio messages.
Permissions you will see
No Slack admin involvement.
- Microphone for Mac Note Taker. AVAudioEngine reads the active input device.
- Screen Recording for Mac Note Taker. ScreenCaptureKit lives under this entitlement, even for audio-only capture.
- Slack needs Microphone for the huddle as usual. Mac Note Taker does not touch Slack's settings.
What you get
A receipt for every huddle.
Speaker-labeled transcript
Your mic is You. Other huddle participants get matched against the cross-meeting voice fingerprint database.

FAQ
Does Slack notify the other side that I am recording?
Slack does not surface anything because the capture happens at the macOS level, not inside Slack. That said: consent laws vary - tell the other side when local law requires it.
Does this work for huddles started from the Slack web app?
Yes. ScreenCaptureKit taps the OS mixer regardless of whether Slack is the desktop app or running in a browser tab.
What about screen sharing during a huddle?
Mac Note Taker captures the audio. Screen content is not transcribed, but the spoken discussion around the shared screen is.
