Best local meeting recorder for Mac in 2026 (no cloud, no bot)
Cloud notetakers ship a bot to your call, upload audio to a third-party server, and bill you monthly. For most meetings - internal syncs, customer calls under NDA, board prep - that's the wrong tradeoff. Here's what to look for in a Mac-native, on-device alternative.
Hard requirements
- Captures both sides of the call (mic + system audio).
- No bot in the meeting. Recording happens on your Mac.
- Speaker labels that survive across meetings (voice fingerprints, not per-call IDs).
- Calendar awareness so attendees auto-fill speaker names.
- AI runs locally (Ollama) or via your own key - not the vendor's cloud.

The free open-source options
Muesli, Humla, Clio Notes, and Meetily are all genuinely local and genuinely free. Muesli is the most polished for live transcription; Humla is the only free one with speaker ID and local summaries; Clio Notes is the most minimal; Meetily is self-hosted and the most technical to set up. What you give up versus the paid apps: cross-meeting speaker memory, calendar integration, meeting auto-detection polish, and someone to email when a recording matters and something breaks. If your meetings are low-stakes, start here - these are good projects.
LocalScribe and Anarlog
LocalScribe pairs whisper.cpp transcription with Apple Intelligence summaries - elegant, but summaries need macOS 15+ with Apple Intelligence, which excludes older systems. Anarlog (previously Hyprnote, then Char) is a strong open-source project from a YC startup with a free local tier, but advanced features moved behind a $15/mo cloud Pro subscription and the roadmap has been drifting cloudward - worth checking where it stands when you read this.
MacWhisper and Granola
MacWhisper is the best general transcription suite on the Mac and records meetings competently - but it is a transcription toolbox, not a meeting notetaker: speaker labels are per-recording and there is no calendar integration. Granola has the slickest notes UX and no bot, but AI notes are generated in its cloud and unlimited use is $14 per user per month - it fails the 'local AI' requirement outright.
How to choose
- Low-stakes meetings, zero budget: Muesli or Humla.
- You mostly transcribe files and sometimes meetings: MacWhisper.
- You want the polished cloud UX and accept cloud AI: Granola.
- Meetings are the job - NDA calls, customer calls, board prep - and everything must stay on the machine: Mac Note Taker.
